The Ministry of Emergency Response is providing 1,000 tents to the earthquake zone in Xingwen county, Sichuan province.

The tents, from the relief material repository of the central government in Chengdu, , have been sent to aid people affected by the quake in the county, which is experiencing rain and snow, the ministry said.

A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck Xingwen, a county administered by Yibin, at 12:46 pm on Sunday.

On Monday morning, Huang Ming, the ministry's Party chief, chaired a video meeting with the Sichuan Firefighting Brigade and its Yibin branch.

Seventeen people received minor injuries in the quake. All of them were sent to rural township hospitals for treatment, and six of them have been discharged.

The provincial department said on its micro blog that nearly 36,000 people were affected by the quake, and more than 10,800 houses were damaged.

Power supplies were cut off in a town in Xingwen but resumed soon after the quake. Water supplies were not affected in any part of the county, said Li Min, chief of the publicity department of the Yibin committee of the Communist Party of China.

Xingwen has karst formations that tend to dampen earthquakes. Many of the wounded were hit by falling objects, Li said.

Some people in Chengdu, Leshan, Meishan and Mianyang cities in Sichuan, as well as in the province's neighboring Chongqing municipality, felt the tremor. But many in Yibin and Xingwen did not feel it at all.

Life went on as usual in Yibin where the Second China International Spirits Culture Festival kicked off on Monday, having drawn top-notch dealers and experts in the liquor and wine sector from China and around the wold.

"The festival is the talk of the town and it seems no quake has taken place. Sichuan has witnessed many major quakes since 2008 and people don't mind a minor one," said Zhang, a middle-aged taxi driver.

Yibin, which is known for Wuliangye, one of China's best liquors, draws dealers and experts in the liquor and wine sector for the festival every December.

A magnitude-8.0 earthquake jolted Wenchuan county in Sichuan on May 12, 2008, killing 69,226 people and leaving 17,923 missing. Two magnitude-7.0 quakes later devastated Lushan and Jiuzhaigou counties in Sichuan.

Sichuan province tops the list for in China.
